Loch invited those who were wilhns to serve against the Matabeles to come forward, in response to which the whale contingent of the Black Watch volunteered, besides others from Joban* nesberg. October 17. The Government have selected 100 of the Black Watch and other volunteers for service in Mashonaland. The British South Africa Company ( has communicated to Kcuter's Agency ] the following telegram : — Capetown, August 25, 2.12 p.m. — Collenbrander , brings message from Lobengula to High j Commissioner and Mr C J. It bodes. Substance as follows : — " I shall pay no* thing nor do anything to make good y damage to Europeans, their crops, home- i steads, etc., until Mashonns, men, ] women, and children, to whom you i grant protection, Victoria, are Riven up to me, Lobengula; they are my slaves ; bad 1 known then what 1 know now, I ] should have given itnpi orders to lako t beasts belonging to Europeans, nml to 1 take all they could lay hand to belong- 1 ing to European*.' " I
