Ball and Social at Pohangina

9 I B Efboh oub oww cobbkspondbntO The premier dance of the season was given in Mr F. Bichard's woolshed, at Pohangina, by the ladies of Coal Creek and Pohangina, on Friday night last to their bachelor friends. To say that the affair turned out a success, and was a credit to its promoters, are phrases totally inadequate to express the results of this initial attempt of the ladies of Pohangina. Whether it was the result of the recent granting of the franchise or not I do not know, but unquestionably they com* pletely knocked the previous attempt of the bachelors into a cocked hat. The decorations of the woolshed were of a very elaborate character, the room being transformed into a veritable Bower of Eden, the |magnificent flora of New Zealand, the kowhai and clematis, being very prominent. The artistic mingling of colours and shades reflecting much credit on the taste and skill of the energetic members of the committee. Miss Richards, who undertook the duties of hon. secretary, performed this arduous task in a manner than won her the greatest praise. The musio was supplied by Mr Alfred Bichards, piano, Mr Patter* son, and others, with a skill which gave pleasure and satisfaction to everybody. To Mrs Bichards is due the thanks of all, as Bhe very kindly permitted the run of her house to the guests for dressing, besides playing the role of hostess in an accomplished and graceful manner. Numerous were the expressions of praise bestowed upon Mr H. Fraser, who super* vised the eatables. Those sugared cakes being the surprise of everybody (including • •' your special " of course). The dresses of the ladies were so elaborate as to call for some attention and remark from me, and to evoke the admiration of the bachelors. (Note, our time hasn't arrived yet to have to pay tor them). I will enumerate a few of the most graceful and really elegant ones, they would have done honor to a more fashionable ball room : Miss Bicbards in cream, Miss Fraser blue and pink, Miss Allerbv salmon and pink, and Miss E. Patterson blue. Among so many graceful candidates for the honor of belle one finds some difficulty in allotting the pride of place. Miss Allerby certainly had a big claim, but the palm of victory undoubtedly lay between two of our local fair, Miss E. Patterson and Miss Bichards. I will not venture to say which. During the evening songs were contributed by Mrs T. Hurst, "Silver Bells," given with expression and feeling Miss Bichards sang " White Wings " m good style, and great things may be expected from this young lady in the future. Mr C. McKenzie sang " Margery " in a brilliant manner and took his audience by storm. At intervals, Mibs Susannah Hurst gave several selections on the piano; her execution, for so young » performer, exciting many highly com-, plimentary remarks. Mr Joseph Browne on behalf of the bachelors of the distnW* thanked the ladies of Pohangina in an eulogistic speech, at the conclusion of which he called for three cheers for the ladies, which invitation was responded t« in a manner that made « the welkin rinV" About twenty- five couples graced &• floor, and dancing, i,T .pitHf E ZvT ' Waßke * tu P wi *BPirit until
