The date for payment of Land Tax has 1 been fixed for December 7th. 1 In the Supreme Court, the proprietor of the Victoria Hotel, Fetone, appealed against a conviction by the Resident Magistrate for damages to the footpath, the existence of a cornice on the premises causing rainwater to drop on the path and wear it away. The conviction was affirmed, but the pen alt j was reduced from Lo Is to Is, defendant to paj costs. This Day. A man named William Hayes was found dead in a house in Grant road yesterday afternoon. Hayes is a widower 60 years of age, and was employed as a caretaker of the house, which belongs to Mrs Clapham. Hayeg lived there by himself. Auckland, October 13. An elderly man, Geo. Bradbin, a carpenter from Tairua, travelling on the train from Te Aroha to Mornnsville witiiout a ticket, was put off there. He then walked on the line, was overtaken by the engine and knocked off by the cowcatcher. He was brought to ffamilton Hospital and examined, when both arms were found to have been broken. Chkistchubch, October 13. W. C. Mills, late clerk of the Heathcote Road Board, has been committed for trial on several charges of embezzlment. Masterton, October 13. The Official Assignee has been released from the administration of twenty-four estates in bankruptcy. The only discharge granted at this sitting of the District Court, before Judge Kettle, was that of Alex. Black, Pahiutua.
