A Clergyman Fifty Tears Behind flip Times

(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) "Wellington, October 11. The Rev. Mr Coffey, in a letter to the Post to-night, refers to the adverse comments that have been made on his Sunday sermon. He says his words were "Christianity isnotaphilanthrophy, it is a life, a creed or doctrine regulating that life " He pointed out that many fell into the error of supposing the work of the church was merely philanthropic, and he questioned the wisdom of clergymen interfering in labor disputes. Then he referred to the necessity of demanding, as a religious duty, six day's work from the labouring men. Demonstration day he considers unnecessary and too much is being made of the working man. who is being spoiled by flattery. Timabu, October 11. In the course of a lecture to-night the Her Frank Isitt referred indiguantly to the Bey Mr Coffey's assertion that the mission of the Church was not philanthropic but to teach a doctrine. He de« dared it to be this mischievous conception which had been chiefly responsible for the evil wrought under the supposed authority of Christianity, and which had alienated the masses from the Church.
