After an acrimoDious discussion Sir Henry Parke's motion for the adjournment of the House was negatived. Mr Kidd moved a resolution for the introduction of the Local Option 13111 Amendment favouring the principle of compensation, and it was incorporated by 48 to 41, and the motion as amended agreed to by 40 to 8. A bill to protect cablegrams published in tho New South Wales papers has been rend a first time on the Legislative Assembly. The Bill protects the messages for 24 hours and makes it penal to transmit them from the colony within the proscribed time. Mr Powell, the Canadian Minister of Trade and Commissioner, addressing the Chamber of Commerce said he looked for ward to the establishment of a fortnightly steam service between Sydney and Van couver, calling i»t Fiji and Brisbane with auxiliary boats connecting New Zealand to the main line at Fiji.
