(PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION). CnaisTCHUHcn, October 10. The Resident Magistrate today gave judgment in a case against a publican oi selling liquor on Sunday morning. He found that the liquor was really purchased on Saturday night, but not taken away till Sunday morning, and dismissed the information, but said the practice ol selling liquor in open hours and nol delivering it till afterwards was a bad one, as it opened the door to evasions of the Act. Auckland. October 10. Tawhaio, the Maori King, now announces his Native Committee is em powered by him to draw up deeds ol leases for the benefit of settlers who maj wish to lease Mtvon lands. The leaset are under the mana of Tawhaio, who says he " levies no taxes, no rates on land, through his great love for the natives." Wellington, October 10. The steamer Tainui left Koi for London yesterday with meat in good condition. Tlie iesignation of Bishop Hadfield of the See of Wellington took effect yesterday. The See is now vacant. The Wellington representatives to the New South Wales RiileAssoeiation meeting left for Sydney in the Wakatipu this afternoon. They are— Harris, and Seaman Eabe, Narals ; Gunner Howe, D. Battery : C. Balhnger, and Kuchen, Petone liifle Club; Wilkic, Upper Hutt Kifle Club ; L. Kirk, Petone Navals ; Trooper Warring, Rangitikei Cavalry. Howe, Kuchen, Balhngpr, Kirk and Wilkie, will represent the Petone Rifle Club in the teams match. This Day. John Morrison and Denis Driscoll were committed for trial for uttering counterfeit money. With respect to Judge- Connolly's attacl. on the Public Trustee, the Timee says the latter was bound to act as he did by law, under the risk of the aative owners
having a clear action against him. . MeCalluin might have had tenancy under tbe Act of 1892, but he refused, and the Public Trustee had no option but to proceed against him on behalf of tbe Native owners. The Times suggests that in cases like McCallum's, where illegality of tenure is not the tenant's fault, the colony should step in anil pay compensation. Dunedtn. October 10. Alfred Warring ton, 21 years, engaged as driver of a grocer's cart, was drowned near Mosgiel this afternoon. He was washing a horse when he slipped into a deep hole. The body was found within a few feet of the bunk in shallow water. Palmehston N., October 10. A public meeting was held last evening in connection with the granting of women suffrage. There were nbout 150 persons present, and tbe greatest interest was evinced. A resolution was passed thank< ing the members of the Ministry, and the oietnbers of the Legislature, who had assisted in passing the measure.
