BOOKSELLER IMPRISONED FOR LIBEL. GAMBLING AND ITS RESULTS. SUICIDE OF A BOOKMAKER. (PKB PBESS ASSOCIATION). Sydney, October 10. Robert Bear, bookseller, was found guilty of publishing a criminal libel on the Bunk of New South Wales and sentenced t"o a week's imprisonment. The trial of the other men is proceeding. Edward Sampson, a well-known bookmaker and owner of horses, committed suicide at Coogde to-day, by shooting himself with a revolver. He was in a financial difficulty owing to heavy losses in racing and gambling. In the Legislative Assembly, Sir H. Parkes gave notice of motion of censure ! owing to the Government proclaiming the Electoral Bill, and leaving the colony without electoral law till January. The motion will be debated to-morrow. Adelaide, October 10. The Government intend to introduce a Bill to give increased representation in the Federal Council. This Day. The Conciliation Bill which is intended to facilitate the settlement of industrial disputes has beeu read a first time in the Legislative Council. Perth, This Day. Parliament is expected to prorogue on Friday. The City Council has drafted bye-laws with the object of prohibiting boxing contests and dog fights. Melsoubne, October 10. The Mercantile Bank prosecution has now occupied the attention of a Bench oi Justices for eleven days. John Adam* son, formerly accountant in the Bank, was released from the witness-box on 3rd October, after hiiving spent nine days there. This Day. A Parliamentary Board has been appointed to enquire into the effect ol the fiscal system upon industry and pro« duction, upon the employment of people, the condition and extension of agricultural, mining, and other producing interests, and upon exports and imports.
