Mr R. Heald was the successful tenderer for the erection of a Primitiye Methodist church at Colyton. The directors of the Feildmg Permanent Building Society will meet this evening at the office of the Manager, Mr E, (ioodbehere. The Charleston Herald intends to open a pie shop for the newspaper agents who swarm about that ancient mining town* ship. Not a bad idea. Rudyard Kipling recently became a happy daddy. Asked which of his works he liked the best he said—" Well, there are some of my works which may perhaps live longer, but the one 1 like best of them all so far ia the new baby." The Hawera Star hears that cattle stealing in that district is not yet put a stop to. A few nights ago some person or persons were disturbed when driving cattle off a well known settlor's place, but got away without being identified. We regret to have to chronicle the death of Mr Robert Kirk, an old and much -respected settler, who died at his residence, Midland road, Colyton, yesterday afternoon. The funeral will take placo on Wednesday. The funeral of the late Mr Ethan Evenss took place in the Feilding cemetery yesterday afternoon, a large number of relatives and friends of the deceased being present. The Rev. Mr Murray read the burial service, and Mr A. Eade was the undertaker. Says to-day's Chronicle: — A Mrs Wheeler, who was recently convicted for sly grog selling at Ohingaiti, and fined £20 and costs, with the alternative of 21 days' imprisonment, was brought in on Saturday last and lodged iv gaol, she having failed to pay the fine. There is nothing like taking time by the forelock. A warrant has been issued against a man for attempting wife murder. Anticipating success in his scheme he had tho usual funeral cards already printed, aud they were discovered in his house. " Ibe best laid schemes o' mice an' men gang aft agley."' According to tho Christchurch Press Mr J. E. Henry holds the record for hancappiog the largest number of starters in a race of over 200 soys in value in New Zealand, seventeen horses haying started in 1891 and 1892 at the C J.U. Steward's Handicap, and m the latter year in the Mauawatu R U. Handicap. A story in the Church Times, vouched for as genuine, tells how a school examiner was nonplussed by one of the scholars. " Were the ancient kings mentioned in the Biblo," asked the learned man, " rich, like modern kings ?" " No, sir," was the reply ; " wo read that they slept with their fathers, and if they had beon rich and well off they would have bad a bed to themselves." Messrs Billins and Bunting, photographers, of Palmorston, have completed three large photographs of groups of footballers, viz , the Half-holiday, Pirates, and Representative teams, in their usual excollent style. The firm havo also lnuuched out into the " one guinea for a dozen cabinet photographs, with a bromide enlargement thrown in " competition, aud their canvassers are actiyely engaged throughout tho district. A Custom House officer at one of the English ports was recently informed that his services would bo dispensed with, as he was eighty years of age. With a freedom of action which would not be tolerated in an Australian colony, he sat down and wrote a letter to Mr Gladstone, pointing out that as he, the age of eighty-three, was Premier of a great country, an official three years his junior might be not incapable of discharging far inferior duties. By return of post the writer received an intimation that he would be continued in his position. The Premier addressed the electors of Wellington suburbs at Pctone on Saturday night in support of Mr T. Wilford, whom Mr Seddon announced had been selected as the Government candidate. There was a very large attendance, including a number of ladies. The Premier reviewed the work of the session and blamed the Council for not passing various Bills calculated to improve the condition of tbe labouring classes. The usual vote of thanks was passed and the utmost enthusiasm displayed.
