— ■ -_t . Legislative Council. (per press association). Wellington, October 6. The Council met at 2.30. On the motion for the third reading of the Appropriation Bill Mr Stewart said that during the next three months the Council would be vilified throughout the country by the colleagues of the Colonial Secretary. Sir Patrick Buckley said the hon. gentleman was out of order in referring to his colleagues, who were well able to take care of themselves. Mr Grace remarked tbat it mattered to members of the Council not one jot how the Council was traduced. Mr McLean said threatened men lived long, and as it appeared to please Government and their supporters to abuse the Council, why let them co ahead. ' b The Bill was then put through the final stages. House of Representatives. The House met at 2.30. The Speaker returned most grateful thanks to the House for the honor it had conferred on him in electing him to the office of Speaker, and said he had honestly endeavoured te carry out the high duties to the best of his ability, and hoped they would overlook any little shortcomings that occurred. Mr Saunders urged that Parliament ' should be called together earlier in the year. Mr Rolleston agreed with Mr Saunders, and said Ministers were bound to convene Parliament as soon as possible after the elections. Mr O'Connor urged the institution of day sittings, and said the House should work shorter hours. Mr Ward referred to the financial position of the colony at some length, and pointed to the fact that the revenue of the first six months of thia year exceeded that of the first months of last year by. £4 1 ,000. Mr Seddon said with regard, to the date of assembling Parliament, that a great deal depended on the circum- _ .ances, but he thought May, Jane, , July, and August generally met the convenience of a large majority of the members. He felt sure the legislation • passed during the present session would redound to the credit of Parliam ent, and members on both sides of ' tbe House would be able to look back t at their work with pleasure and pride. , He moved that the House do adjourn till this day week. The division resulted— Ayes 18, > noes 18. The Speaker gave his casting vote ' with the ayes, and declared the motion carried.
