Tbe Times says the signal success of tbe New South Wales loan shows the readiness and capacity of tbe public to respond when sound security is offered. The heavy tendering was a surprise to city men. It is thought to be due to tbe lowering of the bank rate of discount. The tenders for tbe New South Wales loan took an hour and a quarter to open. The majority were from tho public, the amounts varying from half a million to ten thousand. Mr Powell, Governor of the Bank of England, congratulated Sir S. Samuel, the Agent-General, on the succe .8 of the loan. Mr Tom Mann states that mineis' wages average only 13s a week, and a reduction means starvation.
