Palmerston Hospital Board.
The monthly meeting of tho above •Board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs G. M. Snelson (chairman), Park, Taylor, Saxon, Letbbridge, Hanson, and Purkiss, An apology was received from Mr Goodbehere. Correspondence was received from Dr Maclntire accepting the position of surgeon to the Palmeriton Hospital at a salary of £50 per annum. Miss Ellen Dougherty wrote accepting the position of matron, and also recommending two nurses in whom she had tho fullest confidence. Mr Saxon thought if there were any women in the district who were able to act as nurses they should have preference. The Chairman said they must have trained nurses. Mr Park moved that the matron be instructed to engage nurses Kerr and Tasker, as recommended by her, and that she communicate with the Board, re salaries, before final arrangements are made. — Seconded by Mr Saxon and carried. After a long discussion, the Chairman said the drainage difficulty with the Borough Council could be got over by the Board supplying the material and calling tenders for labour only. It was neces* sary to proceed with the work at once so that the Hospital could be opened during the present Board's term of office. He suggested that tenders be called to close on Thursday next, and that the executive should meet the Mayor and accept one. Mr Saxon was opposed to borrowing money for the purpose of helping the Borough Council to construct a sewer in the public streets. The Chairman's suggestion was adopted on the motion of Mr Taylor. The Chairman reported that all the accounts between the Borough Council and the Board had been satisfactorily settled. . Mr Taylor moved that the Chairman and the Secretary correspond with the Wanganui Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, with a view of getting a refund of money paid over at the lime of separation. Seconded by Mr Lethbridge and carried. In moving the motion, Mr Taylor said he was in favor of using gentle measures at first ; but as lie considered it was an illegal payment, he would be in favor of stronger measures if that were unsuccessful. After passing accounts for payment the Board adjourned.— Standard.
