(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, October 1. Obituary — A. Voa Meyern, portrait painter, aged 40. The Rev G, J. Allen, pastor of the Congregational Church, has intimated his intention of resigning and returning to England. Two men, Millar and Stewart, caught smuggling pipes and cigars from the Wakatipu, were fined .£2l 6s. The Wairarapa Farmers' Co-operative Association has deolared a dividend of eight per cent, with a bonus to share* holders on purchases of 5 per cent. The number of shareholders doubled during the year. The boating season opened yesterday afternoon under most favorable weather. In the abseoce of the Governor, who is ill, the Premier conducted the official ceremony, and there was a very large gathering of the public. All the rowing clubs, Torpedo Corps, and Naval cutters were represented. The eight hours' demonstration committee has resolved to write to all the clergymen in Wellington, asking them to dedicate a sermon once a year to hours of labour, and suggesting Sunday week. Auckland, September 30. The Executive of the Auckland Spec* ial Settlement League, first formed to take up land in the Ohura Valley, decided to take up a block of 9000 acres of bush in the Waotu Survey District, Hokianga. At the inquest on the boy Oaraman, of Onehunga, who died in the Hospital, it was supposed from some irritant poisoning, the post mortem indicated meningitis. The verdict of the jury was death by lockjaw, cause unknown. A son of Nicholson, Whangape, Hoki* anga district, has been drowned. So particulars have reached the police. The Key Mr Fitzgerald, son of the Controller-General, was appointed incumbent of St Matthews. Woodvilxe, This Day. W. H. Hawkius, auctioneer, is announced as a candidate for the SVaipawa seat. Pahutua, This Day. H. Knight, a settler here, with his wife and family leave to-morrow en route to bydney where they will join the New Australian emigrants to Paraguay.
