Educational Requirements of the District

OVER .£IO,OOO WANTED. We (Chronicle,) give below a list of urgent works in the Wanganui District forwarded to the Education Department, at the Minister's request, in June last. The list totals up to the considerable sum of L635G 14s Od. A supplementary list of ivorks that will havo to he attended to soon, but which are not of such immediate urgency as those in the first list, was also enclosed, totalling up to L 4976. (The claims lor the northern part of the district have been omitted). The list of urgent works is as follows : — Ohingaiti, school, L 50 0; Ohingaiti, residence, L 20 0; Nikau, school* and residence, L 390 ; Birmingham, additions to school, L 160; Feilding, ndditions to school and residence, L3UO ; Ongo, school and residence, L 31 0; Pokiori, school and residence, L 34 0; Eohi, new school, L2OO ; Pihaoia, residence, L 19 0; Oroua Bridge, residence, L 190; Carnarvon, new school, L 18 0; Marton, repairs to closets, Lls ; Campbelltown, drainagp, etc ,L 25 ; College street (Palmerston), fencing, etc,, L 47 ; Apiti, fencing, Ll4 14s (id; Terrace End, fencing, LlO ; In tlie above list the amouut for Ohingaiti has to bo deducted, as a special vote has been received in respect of it. But even with this omission, the Board have only L 250 wherewith to meet a de«mand for urgent works which would necessitate ao expenditure of LSOOO. If the Board are compelled, as they will be, to give a deaf ear to ihe claims of new districts during the year, it will be because the Government have failed to supply the necessary money.
