A Serious Offence

[Per Press Association. | Wellington , September 24. A man named Richard Coyne, a carpenter, member of a local volunteer corps, was arrested on a charge of stabbiug with a bayonet a man nnmed Woodward, a laborer. Accused alleged he was assaulted by Woodward and another, who followed him home, and that he took up the bayonet in self-defence to frighten his assailants. Woodwnrd and his friend have also been arrested for assaulting Cojne. This Day. The man Coyne was before the Bench this morning. The men accused of assaulting him said they had nothing to do with it. Coyne ran to his lodgings, which were close bandy, after being assailed, and returned with a bayonet and attacked Woodward and Staples, as the police behove, in mistake for the real aggressor. The charge against them was withdrawn, and Coyne was remanded till to-morrow.
