" REASON " AND THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.

TO THE EDITOR OF TIIK iTAK. Sir,—Again I take the liberty of addressing you on this ever interesting and important topic. I notice with regret the article that appeared in .your issue of the 23rd instant, over the signature of " Reason." It has Btruck me very forcibly —and I have no doubt lias also struck many others —that the writer of that epistle, so full of eloquent and highflown language, is utterly devoid of " Reason." He states that the difficulty could bo remedied by devoting more attention to the water table?, etc. That might bo the means of removing surface water, but cannot possibly elU'ect the purpose required —to drain the blind creeks, stagnant water hole?, marshes, and four gravel pits, all of which are filled with this objectionable, slimy, stagnant, and offensive-smelling water, to say nothing of the croaking of the numerous frogs that revel iv the mire. These low lying places are even lower thau the bed of the destructive " Mftkino," therefore cannot be drained into that. Then wh.it is to be done? A complete sowurogo and drainage scheme such as that suggested in my former letter is, so far, the only feasible idea that has been placed before you or " your cautious city magnates." By the way, it is rather contradictory for " Reason " to refer to Feilding as " a small township," and then refer to its councillors as " magnates ; " but, as I stated before, he is rather deficient in his " reasoning faculties." Further comment is unnecessary. Thanking you in anticipation for inserting this. 1 am, etc , Hkalth.
