RAILWAY DEFICIT OF £;J45,000. LAYING A NEW CABLE. (PtSR PIIEBB ASSOCIATION.) Mklhouknk. Sepictnber 16. Obituaries — Hon. J. Campbell, Minis ter of Education; and Air Burroughs, member for Bendiyo. The llailway Commissioners, in their annual report, disclose a deficit of £845,000. Brisbane, This Day. The cable steamer, Francois Arago, has returned to Bundaberg. The cable was luid half-way between Noumea and Australia, but it was deemed advisable to make fresh soundings before completing the work. Close to this coast the water was found to be two and v- half miles deep. Fresh surveys, however, resulted in the discovery ot a capital bottom at a satisfactory depth. The steamer will begin paying out the Australian end today, aud is expected lo finish on Thursday. Sydney, September 10. There is some prospect of tho Government granting a subsidy to Lluddart, Parker and Co The Premier, in reply to tho communication from the Premier of New South Wales, stated that it was intended to ask Parliament to vote the sum of £500 per jear.
