Determined Suicide in Palmerston

_ . a A young man named John Wilson, apparently about 27 years of age, and of average height, committed suicide at the Central Hotel at an early hour yesterday morning by shooting himself in the right ear with a revolver. He retired to rest at S o'clock that night without partaking of tea. Another young man named Michael Brew, shared the same room, and had gone to bed an hour previously. Brew rose at 5.30 a.m. next morning, with the intention of walking to Feilding. He had asked Wilson, who was then in bed, to accompany him. The request was refused, and Brew went out of the room. Soon afterwards Mr M. Cronin, while lying in bed, heard a loud, report, and hurried to No. 10 room, where the noise came from. Mr Cronin opened the door, and saw Wilson in an uncouscious state. Tho pillow was covered with blood which had evidently come from his ear. Am he was under the impression that the innn wan in a fit he promptly sent a messenger for Dr Satcheli, who after arrival pronounced life extinct. The police were summoned, and Sergt. Slattery searched the room. He found a new six-chambered revolver in the blankets, five of which were loaded, the remaining one havinu evidently been recently discharged. A stamped letter, addressed to a young lady in Blueskin, Otago, was found in j deceased's coat. In an affectionate, nl- j though melancholy, strain he wished her ! fjood-byt, remarking that he whs tired of life and that when she received the letter he would be no more. Wilson sold some of his effects to his mate, informing him that he would have no further use for them, for which lie received £2 ss, aud as no money was found on him, it is surmised that he purchased the revolver with it Wilson was respectably dressed when he arrived at Palmerston, Apo ;t mortem examination of the deceased will be made, and an inquest will be held to-day. — Standard.
