Great loss of life resulted from a severe earthquake along the Italian Adriatic coast on August 11th. The shock was more severe in the province of Foggia. The Chinese Government will not recede an inch from its territory in the Pamir region, and defies Euasia, who has demanded an explanation. At A lion the peasants rsisted the destruction of phylloxera-infested vineyards in the province of Noyara on the ground that they are thereby deprived of employment. Many were injured in conflicts with the police, and a great many rioters were placed under arrest. A correspondent at Cowes sends the following, dated August 11, guaranteeing its authority : — " Last Sunday there were six hours when the tention between France and England was so great that war was considered almost inevitable. Ihe Queen was hourly informed of the state of affairs. The Kaiser, on hearing of the acute point at which the Siamese question had arrived, rubbed his hands together with glee and said, "Now the dance is &oing to begin." Lord Randolph Churchill went to France on August 3rd, accompanied by his wife. It is said he is seriously ill, and it will be a long time before be is seen in England in public life again. An intimate friend of the Churchill family said that Lord nervous system is shattered, and there seems little doubt that he is seriously broken in health. Mrs Langtry, it is said, has not had her usual good fortune at the races this summer. She will go on the English stage in the autumn, in spite of the fact that she must cancel her American engagement. Mr Buskin has almost recovered his health, but relinquishes all literary work and intends taking rest. Dr Walter Maj-Keid, a trembling man, penniless and despairing, once a brilliant writer and a protege of Thomas Carlyle, was arrested in New York, charged with being the manufacturer of a bogus medical certificate. He is an Englishman by birth. mmm
