Opening of the Campelltown Dairy Factory
[FBOit OUtt OWN CORRESPONDENT.] The opening of the above was celebrated yesterday, and never since Catnpbelltown has been started was there such a busy scene. The factory is built near the boundary of the Square and occupies one of the best sites in the township. The main building is 40 x 18, and contains an Akfciebolaget separator, which works with great satisfaction ; a churn, capable of making 500 lbs of butter in one churning ; and a butter working machine. In front of the main building is a lean-to where the milk carts pass under. From this the milk is drawn up on to a stage where it is weighed and emptied into a large vat which conveys the milk to the separator. After the milk is separated it is drawn, by means of a steam pipe, into a large tank where each one receives his skim milk. The engine is under cover behind the main building ; the boiler, of 8 horse power, was set in brick-work by Mr T. Bull ; and the engine, which was built by Tangyes, is a 4-horse power one and works with great regularity. About 332 gallons were separated the morning of opening, and the average revolutions of the separator, during the process, were about 5600 per minute. The largest supply of milk was furnished by Mr E. Buchanan, about 49 gallons. A large number of spectators were present at the opening, and about 20 milk carts might have been seen between 7 and 9 o'clock which gave the scene a very busy appearance. Mr T. Drake is manager for Mr Uorpe who deserves great credit for his energy in starting the factory, as doubtless it will be a great improvement to the place, and a saving to dairyists, who, it is to be hoped, will do their best to carry out the regulations provided for their guidance.
