The Feilding Star. Published Daily. THURSDAY, SEPT. 7, 1893. THE MINISTRY.
In our parliamentary report it is announced that Mr Cadnian has accepted the portfolios of Minister of Justice nud of Mines, and that Mr Seddon has assumed the portfolio of Native Minister. This was not well received by the House, and Mr Rolleston, the leader of the Opposition, condemned tho re- admission of Mr Cadman into the Ministry, aud with some reason expressed the opinion that the accession of Mr Seddon to the portfolio of Native Minister would create an uneasy feeling. Even Mr Shera, who has hitherto been a warm but erratic supporter of the Government, agreed with Mr Rolleston, and said he would consider his position. That means, in his case, that he wants only a little coaxing to be as loyal as ever. As a matter of courso, Mr Seddon defended the action of the Ministry in taking back Mr Cadman, at the same time repeating tho opinion, held by all who have formed an unbiased judgment of the case, that Mr Cadman's honor had not been impugned by the transaction which led to his temporary absence from Parliament. It must not be overlooked that the Native portfolio is not of the importance it once was, and tbat consequently Mr Seddon will be able to manage it quite as well as anybody else. Our only hope is that, for his health's sake, the new Native Minister wili not attempt to become a Maori scholar. We may state that the return of Mr Cadman to the Ministry is not without parallel, because when Mr Hislop resigned in connection with a Timaru Supreme Court case, and went back to his constituents, on his re-election he was again given a portfolio in the Atkinson Cabinet^
