Manchester Road Board
The following business was transacted after we went to press on Saturday last. The undermentioned correspondence was received. From Stephen Pankhurst, Ashurst, re ilood water from a creek running over his land, and enclosing copy of a letter from Mr Lawson, Engineer to the Government Railways, offering to contribute the sum of "£o towards the cost of deepening the creek on the lower side of the road. From W. and H. Hammond, Mar ton, calling the Board's attention to the unsatisfactory state of the culvert leading from the Maori land into the Waituna Valley road leading up to their section. From W. Remnant, again requesting the Board to widen the Penelope road which at present is a mere track, and in a very unsatisfactory condition. Messrs Masters and Matheson, on behalf of a meeting of settlers recently held in Bunnythorpe, waited upon the Board, with a request that the Board would metal the Bunnythorpe Cemetery road, which they considered could be done at a cost of about £40. The metal had been offered free of charge. The petitioners stated that the Manawatu Road Board had spent about £40 in forming the road. The Board promised to consider the request. Mr Parsons, of the Waituna Valley road, requested the Board to throw a bridge across the road at a cost of about £40. The Board undertook to give the matter their attention. RESOLUTIONS. Resolved, That the following names be placed on the rate roll : — That of James Frazer in place of H. D. Densham for section 14 H. ; and that of J. Eustace in lieu of A. Bell, for sections 76 A. and 76 B. Resolved, That the track asked to be opened by Mr Hennigan will be seen to, when the Board are satisfied that it is really a road. Resolved, That this Board cannot see its way clear to assist the Pohangina Board in opening up the road between sections 6 and 7, and through sub-section 10, Manchester Block, inasmuch as at the present time they have to refuse many ratepayers work which requires doing. A motion proposed by "Warden Wheeler, seconded by the Chairman, That before undertaking the widening and forming of the numerous works applied for at every meeting of this Board, it will be necessary to raise the rates, was carried, Warden Con way dissenting, as he. considered that the rates in. Nos. 5 and 6 wards were already two high. Warden Wheeler said he thought it would be ultimately necessary to increase the rates. Resolved, That Mr Williams be allowed to erect a hitching post as requested, also that Mr D. Henderson be permitted to erect a verandah in front of his shop.
