The Run on the Auckland Savings Bank.
i.rEE pa ess association.] Auckland, September 2 There is some reason to suspect the rumours affecting the bank were maliciously 6et alloat b.y a number of Australian spielers, who made a rich harvest amongst the excited crowds in Sydney and Melbourne. One spieler was stopped by the police while he was endeavoring to enter the bank. Several were in the crowd and sotne women are stated to have been robbed. One woman in her excitement, having got her money, £M, and her pass book, left them on the corner of the counter, where they were found by the clerk three hours afterwards. The run upon the bank was the most senseless affair that ever happened in Auckland. When the Bank closed at 4 o'clock the floor was littered with paper, handkerchiefs, torn gloves, cloak buttons and keys, torn from persons in their mad rush to get to the pay counters. Several women fainted, and one or two, suffering from heart disease, will probably pay the penalty of their lives. At a meeting of the Savings Bank Trustees, Mr Cameron, the manager, reported the run was at an end, and the deposits bad more than doubled tho withdrawals. The following resolution was adoped : " That the Trustees of the Auckland Savings Bank desire to thank Governmont for their prompt unsolicited action in reference to tho run upon the Bank yesterday, and recognise how largely their action was calculated to restore confidence. The Trustees further desired to inform Government that the resources of the Bank are well in hand and amply sufficient to meet all demands." To-day the Bank resumed business as usual, the panic having completely subsided. The deposits were exceptionally heavy, owing to the re-investment of withdrawals. Wklmngtojj, September 2. The Colonial Treasurer has received information that the run on tho Auckland Savings Bank has ceased. Confidence has been restored and a large amount of money is bomg re-deposited.
