The Auckland Savings Bank Run
LATF.II PARTICULARS. (PER PRESS ASSOCIATION). Auckland. September 1. The Bank is still crowded with a struggling mass of humanity eager to withdraw money. Man j desisted after a personal interview with the Trustees, who kept prominent in the doorway. The run has been confined to small depositors. Business people generally are not influenced by the panic. Money is being taken out fast and freely. Many who had withdrawn money early in the day are paying in again. The run continues, but is expected to abate at the hour of closing (four o'clock). Tho Trustees never had the slightest fear of not being able to meet the utmost demands that could be made upon the Bank. They have given instructions to the clerks to continue payiog in full to all who desire to withdraw their deposits. The Bank of New Zealand remained open until 4 p.m. in order to pay Auckland Savings Bank cheques. The Savings Bank closed at 4, and re opened from 5 to 7, but ouly a few per* sons put in an appearance, the panic haying apparently exhausted itself. An a consequence of the withdrawal of money from the Savings Bank, a large number of new accounts were opened with the Government Savings Bank by depositors during the day.
