Stock Markets

Mr Matthew Henry reports : — A fair entry of stock came forward to the Manawatu Live Stock Auction Market. The following are quotations : — Cattle — 3-year forward bullocks, £5 15s; fat cows, light, £5 Is; fat heifers, £4 12s ; heifers in calf, to £6 ; yearlings £2 to £2 10. Sheep— Hoggets, 10s 9d ; forward ewes, 10s 6d. Messrs Abraham and Williams report : On Tuesday, at Colyton, a moderate supply of cattle came forward, female stock predominating — these receded in value upon late rates and a number went back unsold — other classes moved ofi freely at quotations. The entry of sheep was chiefly confined to hoggets, the greater portion, being good quality, found ready purchasers at an advance upon recent rates. At the Palmerston yards to-day there was a full muster of cattle. The average number of beef was penned, but proved to be below requirements, a sharp rise of 15s per head with an unsatisfied demand took place. Female stock again out of favor, others kept their value. Among them we cleared a line of 200 overland store steers to graziers outside this district. Sheep, plentiful, hoggets were somewhat easier than on Tuesday, but all quitted together with the remainder of the entry. Ewes in lamb were from indifferent to medium quality, for good quality a strong inquiry exists. Wethers both fat and forward were in buyers 1 favor. The few pigs entered advanced in price ; — At Colyton : Dairy cows made £4 10s to £8 ; springers. £3 18s ; yearlings to 18mo8 steers, 49s to 60s.
