Sib,— l must apologise for taking up space in your valuable paper, but, in face of the reply from W. G. Shearer, of the 31st, I have no other course open. In the first place, Mr Shearer did not get permission from the Secretary, and I should like to ask him how he got permission 'from the Chief Templar, as he was in Pemberton, and did not reach Fcildinc until Tuesday evening. As to his advice of ascertaining facts before rushing into print, I would advise him to practice what he preaches, and as to his offer to recoup me, I would remind him that" charity begins at home." Sm, — The total rainfall for the past month of August wns 5 52 inches, the heaviest fall in one day boinjj I'l7 inches, which was registered on the 22nd. Rain was registered on 24 days during the month, being ever? tiny except the 2nd, 20lh, 2-ltli. and tlie last four days of the month. There were onlj' four frosty nichts during the month, v>z . the 11th, 17th, 23rd, and 29th, the lowest temperature being 27 degrees, during the night of the 11th. The rninfall for the p»st months of June, July, and August, has been exceptionally heavy, amounting altogether to l't'42 inches.
