Accident at Campbelltown
[from our own correspondent.;! What might have rcsultod in a serious accident occurred at Campbelltowu on Monday morning. Mr Geo. Merrett was taking a load of timber to the school, and four or five children who wore going to school were riding on top of th.v> load. One, a son of Mr Drummond, a lad of eight years old, was sitting with his foot towards the wheel, when some object on the road caused him to turn around, and in doing so he got one of his feet caught by a spoke, and was drawn between the wheel and the body of the dray. Before the horses could be stopped, the lad's leg was drawn right through the guard-iron up to the thigh, and ho was placed in an awkward position for his leg to bo extricated. Fortunately tho loosepin was able to bo drawn, and Mr Merrett, with tho help of a crowbar, was able to wrench the whool sufficiently apart from tha dray to allow Mr Smith, who happened to be passing at the time, to lift tho boy from his dangerous position. It was feared his leg was smashed in many places, but, fortunately, the lad escaped apparently well. He was taken in a trap ta Foilding, whore ho was attended by Dr Johnston.
