The Execution of Makin

John Makin, who, vrilh his wife, was convicted on the Oth of March Inst, of the murder of the illegitimate child of a worn.in named Am her Murray, was on A 'must 15th executed m the precincts ol the Darlinghurst Gaol. On Tuesday morn*, ing early Canon Rich, his spiritual adviser, was in attendance, and encaged with the condemned man in devotional exercises. When the time for tho execution arrived, Howard, the hangman, entered the condemned cell, and pinioned Mnkin's arms. Ho Rubinitted without a murmur, and walked to the scaffold with a firm step. The clergyman accompanied him to the door of the gallery, and after a final prayer retired The sheriff (Mr Cooper), with the executioner and his assistant, were the only persons who remained on the scaffold with Makin. The condemned man's face was pale, and as the cap was dropped aud the rope fastened round Mnkin's neck, his lips moved in prayer. When the nignal was given and the drop fell, the body wont through the trap, and hung almost without a quiver. Not a muscle seemed to move, and death seemed to hitvc been instantaneous. There- was not the leant hitch in the arrangements, and the spectacle was as little repulsive as it i« possible to make an execution. The usual inquest was held, and a formal verdict wss returned
