Messrs Younger and Laing's Sale
There was a very large attendance of buyers yesterday afternoon, when Messrs Gorton and Son disposed of the above well-known contractors' horses and plant. The following satisfactory prices were realised: — Violet, L3B 10s; Toby, L 27 ; Darkie, L3l ; Paddy, L 33; Tapua, L2B 10s; Captain, L 26 ; Andy, L 29 10s ; Clyde, L 35 10s, making a total of L 249, or an uvorage of L3l 2s 6d for each horse, The buyers were Messrs J. Laing, Clarke, Bailey Bros., Zaionskowske, Jackman, C. Femberton, Pulford, and Stewart. The drays averaged over Ll2 each, screw-jacks Lo apiece, the tools were very good and realised capital prices, the harness and sundrios also selling well. The pile-driving machine was the only lot unsold, about half the cost being bid. Colonol Gorton pointed out that it was a pity such an excellent plant should be dispersed, as Messrs Younger and Laing woro noted for the capital nmnuor in which they always carried out thoir contracts, and he blamed the co-oporativo system which caused the vondors to go out of business, as contracts were now taken at unr«muuerative rates.^^^^^^^^^^^
