ANOTHER GBEAT LIBEL ACTION. (per press association.) M eluockne, This Day. A deputation of the clothing trades ur^ed the Premier to reduce the advalonw duty on woollen goods from 60 to 20 per cent.' The Hon. P. P. Patterson in replying said the policy of the Government was to not tinker with the tariff but to fix the duties to enable intercolonial reciprocity to be obtained. He thought the best thing would be allowing the Tariff Commissioner to enquire into the whole question. Mr Kimble, one of the Railway Commissioners, has instructed his solicitor to issue a writ for libel against the Argus and Australasian, and claims a sum of £'10,000 damages for statements reflecting on his ability as Commissioner. Mr Murray, another of the Commissioners, is instituting a similar action. Sydney, August 23. A proclaim! lion has been issued ordering vessels from Mediterranean ports into quarantine, on account of cholera. Adelaide, August 23. A fire in Messrs Crook and Brooker's ironmongery store at Port Adelaide caused danibge to the extent of LIO.OOO. Bbisiune, August 23. A witness in the charge aga<nst the man Howard, of causing the explosion on board the steamer Aramtc, testified that the accused, representing himself as secretary of some union, visited him while superintending blasting operations near Sydney, and desired to know how explosives were used. After being shown, Howard desired to purchase some, but was refused.
