" The Workman "
The Dunedin Globe deals as follows with the above play:— Mr Frank Harvey 'B five act drama " The Workman " is of a high moral tone, being a story of an almost everyday occurrence, and abounding in thrilling situations. The plot is easy to follow. A carpenter, John Tressider, (Mr C. Holloway) is married to Bessie Barton (Miss A. Dorwyn), and for twelve months the couple are very happy. ! A former admirer of Tressider's then appears on the seene — Rachel Westward (Miss L. Raymond)— and at once developes a scheme for destroy, ing the happiness of the young couple. Bessie's sister (Miss E. Jackson), has been rather wild, has become a mother, and ultimately marries a baronet, Sir John Chesterton, (Mr G. Melville), from whom the deplorable fact is kept a secret. Rachel Westward, substituting Bessie's name fcr that of her sister, discloses the whole of the story to Trcssider, who at once mistrusts his wife and casts her off. The trouble causes Tressider to take to driuk and he loses his situation. Rachel comes on the scene, and Bessie's baby dies. Subsequently, Bessie's dishouor is revealed to the baronet, but matters are settled in a manner which might be thought impossible. The comic element was supplied by Mr Oily Deeriug who as Tressider's father, is depicted as a man with a horror of honest work and a craze for strong drink. Miss Medway as Bessie's mother sustained the part very well. The minor characters are ably filled by Misses Clayton and Elden, and Messrs Willard, Money, Rosmore, Power, and Coughlan. In the first act a comedy dance is introduced with advantage.
