The attempt to float the Achievement last night failed, but was renewed this morning with success, and the barque is now being brought up the harbour. Auckland, August 18. Government has notified the Auckland Citj Council that thej will not continue the arrangement made in 1886, by which Government leased the Borough Endowment of Pouikere Block for the purpose of forming village settlements At the Crown Lands Board it was slated that the lands disposed of from the 29th ult to the 12th inst, of which 1730 acres were on perpetual lease, occupation with right to purchase, 1185 acres, with 33 selections of 2991 acres. Wee Long, a Chinaman, was charged with stabbing It. Matthews. Tho evidence showed the accused had been assaulted, kicked m tho face and badly handled. He then took out his knife but made no attempt to riso it till Matthews rushed at and struck him. The KM. dismissed the charge and said he would not order Matthews to be prosecuted for perjury but will leave it to the police. Blknhkim, This Day. The interprorinctal football match, Nelson v Marlborough, wai played yesterday, aud was won by Nelson by 8 to nil. HoKITIKA, August 18. The inquest on the fires at the Occidental Hotel concluded to»day. The jury found that the building had maliciously been set fire to by some person unknown, but the evidence directed strong suspicion towards Mr? Hayes, wife of the proprietor of tho nearest hotel. It is understood that the police will lay an information against her. Chbistcuchcu, August 18. At a special meeting of tho Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to dav, a motion was passed protesting against the proposal in tho Government Railways Bill appointing a Minister of the Crown to v seat on tho Railway Board, practically vesting in him tho control of the Board, as such involved a roturn to political management of tho railways.
