Sir. — I nm much pleased to see by this evening's Stab that there is a proposition on foot for tin* enclosuro of t lie four sections comprising this Square by means of posts and chains. I have long been a strong advocate for something being done toward* the improvement of tho Squaro, and on ono or two occasions, when I was Mayor, I submitted to tho Council pluuß for effecting this object. As thero appears to bo vory httlo prospect ot tho Council's funds bom;* avuihiblo tho only alternative is to resort to public subscription as proposed, and in order to mako a beginning I enclose my cheque for ono guinea, and shall ho much obliged if you will band it to tho Treasurer of any cotnmittoo which may bo appointed for tho purpose of carrying out tho proposod work.
