The inquest was concluded to-day on the remains of Mr Richards, of Broad Stairs, a bathing place in Kent, who was killed a week ago through the explosion of a parcel brought to him through the post. The evidence adduced failed to show the cause for the outrage, and the mystery remains unsolved. The agitators assert that there are 100,000 unemployed in London. They have written to the Premier, and if he does not reply they will hold meetings outside the residences of members of Parliament. August 2. The committee presided over by Lord Onslow appointed to enquire into the question of marking of frozen ment have submitted their report. They find there has been much evasion of the Trades Mark Act. but that the offence is princi* pally confined to the retail trade, and recommended that butchers dealing in imported meat should be registered. A burglary was committed at the rest* denes of Countess Wilton at Maidenhead, and her jewels of the value of several thousand pounds stolen. The strikers at Dcwsbery attacked the working miners. The police were called on, and during the affray several of them were injured. Miss Shaw, m an article in the Times, says tticre are only two causes which are likely to arouse the cultivated classes in Australia, namely : Danger to the public finance and federation, but the public is apathetic about the latter. The Vossische Zeitung says that Russia is trying by means of a hostile tariff to bring about a rupture between the members of the Triple Alliance. Prince Von Bismarck's organ believes that Italy is secretly allying itself with Russia, because it has no faith in Great Britain. Rome, August 1. The Pope has declined to interpose in the French elections.
