The Union Steamship Company, in a circular to the crews of their vessels, intimating a reduction of £1 per month to come into force on the Ist September, state that since 1890 the business has not shown any satisfactory results, the dividends having declined, and during the past year it had been necessary to trench on the insurance fund. The circumstances of the colony are not so unfavorable as to necessitate sweeping reductions as in Australia. The wages will be : — Seamen and trimmers, £6 per month ; firemen and greasers, £5.
