Waituna Notes

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) The wet weather experienced here lately has again made the roads very soft, and prevented the contractor from completing the repairs to the road leading to West Waitapu. The other ones are very boggy, Sheep are, generally speaking, in a more healthy state than they were last winter, I but I hear of heavy loss of lambs in i several cases. Cattle are looking well and feed is pretty good for the time of year. The library in connection with the Sunday School has had a nice addition of new books, which are much appreciated by the children, who are contributing towards the cost. The two local schools keep up their attendance very well, each being in charge of a popular governess. The .young ladies of Beaconsfiold gave a return ball to the bachelors, and married '. folks, of the district, in Mr Buchanan's woolshed, which was tastefully decorated for the occasion The room was crowded and everything went off first-class. The rofresbments wero of the best and good music was supplied by local talent. At the close three cheers were given for the ladies, for having given the most successful dance held in the district. I see Mr Bennett's accommodation house is now open, and has been for the last three fleets. Goodness only knows that it has been a long-felt want to the district, as travellers and others have been p\it to great inconvenience, bnt now they can have all their requirements, as the charges are very moderate. As the proprietor has gone to a good deal of expense in enlarging, I hope the enterprise will meet with the success it deserves. A great improvement is to be made shortly to the front entrance, which has been sadly needed. 1 hear on good authority that Mr Taylor, butcher, of Makino, intends to open up a branch shop in this district. I hope he will do a good business, and wish him every success.
