London Butter Market
Messrs Barraud nud Abraham, Foilding, recoived the following report by the last San Francisco mail from their London agents, Messrs R. T. Turoboll and Co. :— The Colonial butter trade with tho United Kingdom has been markedly increased during the season which has just terminated, the imports being more than double the arrivals of tbe previous season. The figures given at foot exhibit tbo rapidity of the growth of tho business, and although the average price of this is below that of last «eaaon, it must be acknowledged that Colonial butter has fairly established itself in this market on a satisfactory basis for tbe factories. The market during the season If. 12 opened on a lower level, grndunlly rising during the first throe mouths until the highest point for finest was reached in January at 128s per cwt.. and prices were fairly steadily maintained during the next quarter, while the top price, 1 265, of . season 1892-3 was touched at the very liegin ing in November, receding (except for a few very fine parcels) to 12 Is in December arid 122s in January. At this point the Danish butter was considerably rcdoced to meet the serious competition from Australasia, and a. the trade in the West aud North of England was very depress*! On account of Labour troubles aud bad trade generally, prices for Colonial produce — which was in large supply, with abnomally heavy shipments ou tbo way — ran down rapidly and on 17th February tho official quotation for finest Australian bad fallen to 104s per cwt. The "record" shipment by tbe Biß. " BalUrrat arived on 28th FeWuary and was followed in two days by tbo " Oruba," but the markftt Jwul rallied a little in spite of tbe quantity, and in March some special factories obtained as much as 1 1 2s. In April — which is rather late for Colonial batter to come here--?the market fell off Again, and although early in the month 100s was realised for some, tbe official quotation was down 64s for finest The weather daring tbe latter moiety of this season has been exceedingly mild and that also affected prices.
