| The Junior Cup match between Feild- , ing and the Pirates (of Palmerston) was , played on the Oval on Saturday afternoon , last, and resulted in a win for the latter , by two points (a try) to nil. In the first , spell Feilding had decidedly tho best of I the game and kept the visitors on the , defensive most of the time, until the , Pirates caught Feilding napping and t removed the scene of operations to the , homo team's twenty-fives, from whence I the local forwards took the ball to neutral territory, and from this till call of time . play was more even. On starting the , second spell the Pirates at onoe assumed I the aggressive, and ufter some minutes . give-and-take piny, which the visitors had , slightly tho best of, Richards followed up , a long kick and succeeded in gaming j possession of tho ball and thus scored a j try. North took the kick at gonl, from a I difficult angle, but failed to increase the , score. Feilding then made several at--3 tempts to score, but the good defensive , play of their opponents frustrated them und time was called without further score. The ground was in a very bad state and before the game had ended was a sea of mud. Tho refereo was kept very busy through infringements of the rules, but i no doubt the elippery state of the ball was responsible for this state of affairs. It , was almost impossible for the three quarters to be of much service, nnd consequently the forwards and halves had ' to do most of the work. The match Hunterville v. Awahuri 5 played at Hunterville last Saturday, ended in a win for the local men by a , try (disputed) to nil. We understand > that Awahnri lodged a protest against . the match being awarded to Hunterville, on the grounds thar the referee was in- , conrpetont. The matter will be considered t at the next meeting of the Union to be held at Marton.
