The Financial Crisis
TPer Press Association.] London, July 14. Mr Alexander Young has been appointed official receiver for the Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. Several failures have occurred on the Exchange, mainly in connection with the American market. It is stated that the books of Messrs Goldsbrough, Mort and Co. show that advances amounting to L 3,410,000 were made, and that amouut was divided among 154 accounts. Ten of the largest j accounts average L 149.000. Financiers j in the city favor the suggestion that the colonies should invite an English Financial export to advise them on the financial situation of Australia. It is suggested that Sir Reginald Earl Webby, Permanent Secretary to the Treasury, Edward W. Hamilton, assistant Financial Secretary to the Treasury, or Sir Robert G. C. Hamilton, ex Governor of Tasmania would be suitable gentlemen. It is believed by the British Government it would be unwise for the colonies to altogether stop publio works, and the construction of railways. The petition to wind up the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company will be heard on the 21st instant.
