Feilding Borough Council
. » A special meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening to consider the report of the Clerk of Works with reference to the damage done by the floods of the 6th inst. Present — The Mayor, Councillors Carthew, Haybittle, Lethbridge, Gould, Sandilands, Chamberlain, Fowles, and Thompson. The purport of the Clerk of Works report was as under : In company with the Public Works Committee he had made an inspection of the damage done ; it was as follows 2 — South street bridge.— This bridge, built some 18 years ago, has for years past been found too small to carry the stream in times of flood. It has been frequently, repaired, and on this occasion has been so much damaged that it would be in--1 judicious to spend any more money on 1 it, considering its age and inadequate size. Should the Council decide not to build a new bridge at present, a ford might be constructed at comparatively small expense. The Warwick street bridge and Denbigh street ford , only sustained trifling damage, which [ has been repaired. Duke street ford, i — The bank of the stream has been • cut away on on« side of the ford and 1 for some chains above it, and the bank • requires protecting with willows, etc. ! The ford has been temporarily reL paired. North street foot-bridge and ford. — The approaches have been carried away on the south side. The fordw ' is now being repaired. It will be^ necessary, if the footbridge is rei erected, to drive two piles and protect tho. bank of the stream for about three chains above the bridge, as the current i sets strongly against it. Slight dam- ■ age was done to the, new drain in West i street. With the exception of South I street bridge the cost of repairing the ■ damage -referred to would be about i £20^cti£cluaive of a few pounds for pljdjfing willows, «fee. ' JHSposed by Cr. Fowles, seconded by UPPtLaybittle, That a ford be made at South street in place of the old bridge, and that the work be done at once. , — Carried* Proposed by Cr. Thompson, seconded by Cr.
