A Terrible Plague

(PBR S.S. MANAPOURI AT THB BLUFF.) Sydnry, June 28. Captain Plank, o! the barque Margaret Ada Carswell, -which arrived at Newcastle on Saturday from Santos, Brazil, reports awful ravages of yellow fever in that part. In one week 15 masters and several hundred seamen diod. In March the death rate averaged 60 per day, and on one day 160 persons died. Many vessels were deserted, and lying in tne harbor with not even a watchman on board. Nine of Captain Plank's crew were laid up, and two died of the disease. Carts were carrying away dead bodies piled up seven feet high. Everyone was clearing out who could, and many vessels had been lying there for over 12 months with the cargoes still under the hatches, the crews haying deserted.
