The English Press on the Late Mr Ballance

♦ A London correspondent writes:— The newa of Mr Ballanee's death was received in England with sincere regret bj oolonists of all shades of political opinion. The Pall Mall Gasette says that Mr Ballanee's death v practically removes from ths colony the last of its great public men. The At. James Uasette asserts that ** it was due in some measure to his exertions that the colony gave np borrowing in the London market, and set an exsmple ot Australasian retrenchment." Very complimentary references to Mr Ballance and to the condition of the colony under his Premiership are made by most the papers. One of these notices had a rather diverting ooßaeqveaee. The St. James* Uaaatte remarked that his saosessfnl career constituted one more example J of the Irish aptitude for politics out of their own country." This outraged a worthy but excitable Unionist who observed that " whilrt the Wellingtons, WoJeswteya and Dvtferins, who helped to bmifd up the British Smpire, are quoted by (iladstonisns as proofs of the capacity of the Irish for Home Rule," the net was thai "most of these mea were bora in Ulster 1 " Bearing this in mind he investigated the qaestioa of Mr Ballaaee's birthplaoe, and food to his extreme joy that it was ia Oonnty Antrim, "not more than *3Q miles from Belfast." "Once again/ he shoots in exultant strain, " it is the loyal North that has given to the Ssapire an empire*building citisen." The fit James Gasette says "Mr Ballanee's career was an honorable one, and that he was •• a capable and staeere economist." 'J he Bcho calls him " one of the most highly-honored and respected of colonists" The Pall Mall Oasette thinks his loss will be greatly felt at this juncture, and that his place will be difficult to fill. The Manchester Courier says" Lis ability aad popularity marked him out for a oufh position in the colony. He filled varioM Ministerial post* with credit, showed himself a mend of the people, an able financier, and an honest aad trustworthy statesman." The Globe terms him w one of the most highly honored and respected of colonists," and save that his career was" quite a romance in real life."
