Feilding Borough Council

- o • i i. - A special meeting of the above was held on Thursday evening last to consider the question of erecting municipal office*. Present — Messrs Goodbehere (Mayor), Gould, Thompson, Haybittle, Carthew, and Chamberlain. Mr G. C. Hill stated, that he had in* spected two or three sites which would be suitable as temporary premises. The shop formerly occupied by Mr Galway could be fitted up, and the baok part utilized as a library. The two sample rooms at the Manchester Hotel were also available, as also Mrs Smith's front shop in Manchester street. The Mayor considered Galway's old shop would be most suitable as ft temporary site. Mr Gould was in favour of building offices of two storeys; and they could easily let any rooms wnich they did not require. The Mayor said to do that it would be necessary to raise a loan, and spoil of the ratepayers would have to be taken. Proposed by Cr. Carthew, seconded by Cr. Haybittle, that in the event of the Town Clerk securing the shop lately occupied by Mr Galway, as an office, reading room, and library for this Council, that body would agree to contribute £80 a year, and make their own arrangements with the Library Committee. Carried. Proposed by Cr. Carthew, fseconded by Cr. Haybittle, that the Mayor, Crs. Haybittle and Carthew, form a committee to make arrangements with the' Library Committee re the rent of a reading room. Carried, The Mayor stated that all the rate* payers he had spoken to. were in favour of the Council building offices of their own. He was strongly of opinion that in two months time the Council wonld be in a position to purchase a site out of its ordinary revenue. Proposed by Cr. Haybittle, seconded by Cr. Chamberlain, that the Finance Committee be asked to furnish a report of ways and means for the purpose of ac* (miring a site for municipal offices, such report to be laid on the table at the next ordinary meeting of the Council. Carried. The Council then adjourned.
