Mr J- II T Baker, Commissioner of' Crown Lnndsiriieltl^ commission at Has* tie's Hotel yesterday afternoon, under " Ihr Naval and- Military Settlers' and ■>■ Volunteers' Land Act. 1892." The fol lowing evidence was given by claimants insirous of taking up land under the above Act : — David Block deposed that he had been a private in the Colonial Defence Force, Auckland, under Colonel Nixon; and he v cl Aimed to be entitled to 60 acres of land under the Act of : J£Mt. He J^e^ha^ service in 1863. and remained in tt until the force was disbanded the. following, year. Claimant produced a cefeftficaife/ from Captain Bower, which showed he the years 1863 and 1864, John Currnn deposed that 'he hae\. served in the Boyal Lancashire Militia, " and produced lus discharge, signed in April, 1863. He volunteered for service jp the Crimean "war in~.tßtss.j i@|aimanA also put in a cVrtificate^froni T\J*%oorl^ of Eaiapoi, showing that he resided there from 1863 to 1881; be has since then lived in Feilding, John Kitchen deposed that ihe had been a private in the 65th regiment, from which he was discharged with a good;, conduct badge in August. 1865, and he then came out to New Zealand. He resided for some time in Auckland, but preferred to come here. He put;iD »« r certificate from Mr Kirton, to whom he? ? was known during the "past two years. '■ James Blackmore deponed that»;hehad> been a sergeant in the 96th and 38th regiment*, and obtained his discharge in : 7 1860. He camo to New Zealand iff 1874, and had resided in Feilding ever since. Claimant was instrumental in the.forp*, ation of the Manchester Rifles, and a/ctttT as color *sergeant from the commence" ?J ment; he was appointed a sub-lieutenant- * in 1880, and sv lieutenant in^lßß3 Frederick Richards' deposed' that he was a private in the Wanganui C* T alry about 30 years ago. In 1865 he joined the Turakina Cavalry. He did not applj for Irs volunteer scrip at the time he resigned, ia 1866, because at that time be did not require it. . , . < f John Lowe had served as a private, in [ the SBih regiment, and obtained his dis> " charge in 1871 with five gooJ conduct badges. He cime to New Zealand in' : 1874, and had resided in. Feilding ?yt& *' since. • . Thomas Hcnson (junr.) deposed that he had seen active service as a member of the Wanganui Cavalry in 1868, and three following year*; he' continued in that corps till 1973, and afterward* joined the Alfred troop for two years. Subsequently he belonged to the. Alexandra Cavalry and Aramoho Light Horse,; He 1 : ' did not put in his claim before the Act of 1869 was passed, as he thought it was too late. John Murphy deposed that he had been a private in the East Indian Horse Artillery, whence he was discharged in 1862 with two good cooduot badge*. He remained at the Cape of Good Hope for two yearn, and then came over to New Zealand as an immigrant. *He has made no previous claim.
