I think, as we have done without one for fo long, we., can, do without altogether. Ashurst seems plenty close enough for that purpose. If We do have one here the road will have to be made wider — as wide, in fact, as f hose in the quiet, respectable little town of Feild* ing. The roads here are through swamps, with large ditches on each side of them, and I hare known of cases where even sensible animals hare fallen into them and been drowned— or very nearly so. . Only recently a cow, the property of a settler, got into one of these dan j?er« traps, and was so Injured that after it was released it walked away a few chains and then lay down and died. This would probably be the fate of several human beings if a hotel is started here; any-* way, a lot of the residents are opposed to the idea, and will make a fight to prevent its culmination. Whether they will be victorious, or otherwise, remains to be seen. Services of the Church of England were held here last Sunday, and the at* tendance was very good. The new. orgaja was used for the first time, and was a great help to the singers, who haye taV ent enough among them to make a really good cboir — with diligent practice*
