There was a strong muster of the Manchester Rifles on Thursday last. Vfter the men had fallen in, and the jompany proved by Color-Sergennt Milson Captain Kirton addressed them briefly ind thanked thein cordially for the honor they had done hiui in electing him to the command of the company. He also referred to other matters in connection with the affairs of the corps. After the U9vml company and general drill, a meeting was held for the election of a lieutenant There were two candidates, Sergeant W. Bellve and Volunteer Burlace, who both retired while the ballot was taken. Corporals G. H. Saywell and Boyd acted as scrutineers, and Mr R. P. Haybittle as enumerator. The result was the election of Mr Burlfice by the required majority. The' candidates were then recalled and the result declared. Captain Kirton then presented the newly-elected officer to the company, who greeted him with three cheers. An adjournment was then made to Mrs Hastie's hotel, where the healths of Captain Kirton and Lieutenant Burlace were drunk with all the customary honors. Sergeant Bellve, in an appropriate speech,, proposed the health of his opponent, and, while doing so, cordially thanked those who had voted for him. He would do his best to assist Lieutenant Burlace and the corps generally. This manly address was loudly npplanded. The meeting then broke up. Afterwards a meeting of the shooting committee was held, and a lot of detail work done in connection with the social and dance, to be held on the Queen's Birthday, as well as the firing for prizes on that day. It was decided that the company should fall in at 8 a.m. in front of the Assembly Booms, from whence they will be marched to the rifle range, where the feu de joie will be fired. It will interest ruemle*s to know that absentees will be fined Ml for ron attendance. No exceptions will be made except on account of sickness, which must be shown by a medical certificate. The following is a list of extra prizes tc be fired for on May 24th, 1893 :— Album, presented by Mr Carthew ; clock, presented by Gruar and Co. ; spurs, presented by Mr B. R.: Collins ; trousers, (materal to be chosen by winner) presented by E. Martin ; 6et of carvers, presented by Saywell Bros. ; tooth brushes and rack, presented by Mr Garratt; teapot, presented by Mr Jus. Fraser; riding whip, presented by Mr Belfit ; binocular glasses, presented by Mr J. H. Blackmore ; one pipe in case, presented by Mr J. F. j Donelly ; drapery vale of 20s, presented by Mr J. C. Morey ; album, presented by Mr J. S. Milson ; books, presented by Mr A. R. Curtis ; felt hat, presented by Mr IJ. Cobbe ; felt hat, presented by Mr J. Burlace ; one pair boots, presented by Mr Thacker ; one silk handkerchief, presented by Mr J. B. Hamilton ; prize value of 10s, presented by Hr H. Worsfold ; tea set, presented by Bramwell Bros. ; prize value of 20s, Mrs Oliver ; box cigars, value of 40s, presented by Mr W. Light. A number of other gifts have been promised which will be published on Tuesday. The prizes will be on view in Mr Scott's window on Monday. The classing of the same will take place on Tuesday, and will be advertised in the Star of that evening.
