London*, May 17. The Failure of the City of Melbourne Bank caused no excitement in the cit3 r as the news was discredited. Deposits in Edinburgh amount to about a quarter of & million. J The Insurance Companies in Edinburgh and the legal profession have appointed a committee to consider tho schemes for reconstruction of the suspended banks. The Duke of Edinburgh is a heavy loser by the recent failures of Hallett and Co. and the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney. The Treasury officials consider it premature to appoint officers to confer with tho Agents-General upon the question of minting silyer and bronze coinage until tho views of all the colonies have been expressed. This is* regarded as shelving the question. The Daily News says theifall in colonial stocks is due to the forced realisation of securities owing to money being locked up in the various banks, and has no reference to their future value. The hearing of the petition for winding up the Australian Joint Stock Bank has been postponed till the 7th of June. An order was made for winding up the London Chartered Bank of Australasia.
