Birmingham Notes
♦ | FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. | Mr Touapkin's store had a narrow escape from destruction by fire on Monday night. It appears the manager, Mr Aahton, went into n storeroom with a lighted match in his hand to stop a leak in a kerosene drum. The match having burned to Mr Ashton's fingers, he dropped it on to the floor, which was covered with sawdust saturated with kerosene from the leakage, and the room was immediately in a blaze. A number of willing hands were soon oa the spot and with their combined efforts the fire was extinguished. Mr ABhton performed an exceedingly plucky action before the fire was subdued. A barrel containing powder became ignited and this he pluckily seized and removed from the building. Had there been an explosion, not only would the building have been destroyed but there might have been loss of life. There was a gale of wind blowing at the time, and if it were not for the prompt action taken the fire might have spread to adjoining buildings. The loss is covered by insurance.
