Waitnna Notes
•* I PROM OUB OWN OOKKESPONDENTB.I The occupants of a camp in the Wai* tana district recently caused quite a little sensation by reporting that J%J bad on several occasions been fired at in the night by some mysterious unknown. Tbe shooter is evidently a sweet-notioned sort of a cuss, for they state that on one occasion onte of his bullets entered a bag of sugar, which was in close proximity to a sleeping bush«whacker. One of the members of the eamp«party states that he distinctly saw a Maori, carrying a loaded gun, stealthily approach the tent, but when noticed he immediately made off, without even waiting to<e*&hange compliments, and suddenly disappeared in the bush. Several -persona -have been oat oa the war-path after , his dttsky nibs," but their efforts to capture this f bony desperado of "Weird Waituna," have so far proved unsuccessful. Thoae who profess to be in the know are of opinion that ''His Shooting Majesty " has artfully put on hjs vspouryjrings, and gaily scooted off> to those dazzling regions of delight frhere the man who promptly -pays his advertising account occupies a prominent place. J .We under* stand that a searching enquiry has been made relative to the matter, with the result that the whole affair bas the appear* ance of what 'Ary would term "* A bloomin* 'oax, Mr 'Awkins." If the miyfterious shootist can be got several gentlemen have expressed a desire to have him put in a glass case, carefully packed in lavender, and sent off to the Chicago Bxhibition. . , ,' , The settlers of the Waituna and Went Wtfitapu have- been considerably puzzled by some person shooting at a bush-fel-lers' camp on Mr Short's property; The man made it so uncomfortable <fpr them that the men removed their campjmt on to a cleaitngi a*djoii|tng, and nave not been molested sines. But on Sunday night he appears to ,l»ave _ broken out afresh, for some one fired eigmt^hots at Mr Short's house,;. some, of lath- shots striking the.sonllery. ; Mr Short^saw the flashes, and says thoy kepi coming from different positions. The shootiait also visited Mr Murray V whose property adjoins Mr Short's, and. fired two shots tbere without doing any harm.. The wbole neighbourhood is feeling some alarm, and all the guns. are ready tor action — prepared to give this, unwelcome visitor a warm reception. ; /.',.';' " The Beaconsfield . .'. baclielors invited their friends to a dince at Mr Bu* chanan'a woolshed on Friday nigbt, and, notwithstanding the. .damp weather, a good niimHbr turned up and utf-an en* joy able time; dancing being kept up until 3 a.m. . '....vi I fear the proposed creamery here is likely to fall through for the present, as tbe district does not seem ripe for it yet. Feed is veiy plentiful, and stock an looking well.
