BISHOP HADFIELD'S SUCCESSOR.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sir, — With regard to the Press Association information on the above subject, which appeared in your issue of Saturday last. I feel it my duty, as one who was present and took part in the private conference of members of the Synod, at Wellington, on the sth inst., to point out — Ist. That no " Election " was made or could be made by a " Conference." Ssnd. That for a Bishop of the Province of New Zealand to be " ordained," I presume " Consecrated " is meant, at Home, is contrary to the Comon Law of our Church, and therefore an evident error. 3rd. That the Synod will not "meet as a matter of form to confirm " the election but to elect. 4th. That it by no means follows that a clergyman nominated will necessarily accept the Bishopric. sth. That, as a resolution unanimously agreed to by members of the Conference, pledged them not to discuss the proceedings of the Conference with any but members of the Synod, it is much to be regretted that information, both meagre and faulty concerning the proceedings of an avowedly private meeting, should have been telegraphed all over the colony and to England ; thus materially increasing the difficulty of obtaining a really first-class man as successor to Bishop Hadfield when he resigns. I am, etc., Feilding, Arthur Hermon, April 17, 1893. Curate.
