In reply to a letter, in reference to the payment of survey fees by special settlement associations, the Minister of Lands writes : — " It has been found impossible to undertake the surveys of association j blocks within a reasonable time, hence tho rule now requiring them to pay in advance so that the authorised surveyor might be engaged. We have a limited sum voted by Parliament and unable to spend more. Experience now is that associations expect the Government to finish the surveys of large forest • converted blocks with very difficult road lines, to lay out all within a very brief time, and it is therefore proposed that they get their work done by private surveyors out of the deposit. — Standard. The Palmer Nonpareil Company gave their final performance in Feilding on Thursday evening last before a rather small but very appreciative audience. Mr Palmer exhibited a number of panoramic views, which were very good, particularly several excellent bits of scenery on the river Thames, in and around Richmond, Greenwich Hospital, St. Albans' Cathedral, street views ot Amster- ! dam, and many others. The singing of Mr Palmer was by far the greatest treat of the evening, his rendering of " Ora pro nobis," " The golden wedding," " A dream of home,', and " Sunset thoughts," being very good. The programme concluded with Mr Palmer singing, by special request, " There is no one like mother to me ; " in this song the vocalist was heard to great advantage, as it was rendered in a truly masterly manner. The enter tainment concluded at about 10.30. Mr Macpherson, the Secretary of the Longburn Freezing Company, is now engaged in making a vigorous canvass among the farmers of the district with the object of placing the additional shares required to be taken up, and is meeting with very fair success. If the settlers primarily interested in the carrying on of the works, however, are fully alive to their own interests, they will act resolutely in the matter, and not content themselves with merely making promises to take shares. Something more definite than that is required, and if the present opportunity is lost, and the control of the works passes from their hands, they will only have themselves to blame. A word to the wise should be sufficient, and we hope shortly to hear, as the results of Mr Macpherson's efforts, that the necessary increased capital is subscribed.— Man- i ty&tu Times. Tha inaugural meeting of the Feilding Mutual Improvement Society was held in the Primitive Methodist Church yesterday evening. There was a good attendance of members of both sexes. The meeting took the form of a social, and commenced with singing a hymn, which was followed by a short prayer by the Rev. G. Clement, President of the society. The President, in his opisnjng address, spoke of the aims of 6iich a society, and the benefits to be derived from it by both young and old of either sex. The following ladic-a and gentlemen contributed to make the evening enjoyable : — Misses Blackmore and Curtis, duet ; Mr Johnston, reading: Miss Unwin. solo ; Mrs CJeinent, recitation ; quartette by Misses Curtis and Blackmore and the Rev. Tho society should have a prosperous career before it, especially when it is taken into consideration that ladies are not only admitted but are taking an active interest in its welfare.
